<P><FONT size=5><IMG class="left image340" alt="Science Connects Mental Illness And Creativity" src="http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/39/2010/05/340x_van_gogh517.jpg" width=340></FONT>Researchers have found that a key brain system is similar in <A href="http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2010-05/ki-clt051810.php"><FONT color=#c90f36>creative, mentally healthy people and people with schizophrenia</FONT></A>, bolstering the notion that the factors that contribute to <A class=autolink title="Click here to read more posts tagged #mentalillness" href="http://jezebel.com/tag/mentalillness/"><FONT color=#303030>mental illness</FONT></A> may also confer benefits.</P>
<P><A href="http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2010-05/ki-clt051810.php"><FONT color=#c90f36>Researchers at the Karolinska Institutet</FONT></A> found commonalities in the brain's dopamine system between people with schizophrenia and creative, non-schizophrenic subjects. Specifically, both creative and schizophrenic people tended to have a relatively low density of dopamine receptors in the thalamus. Study author Fredrik Ullén explains that this might lead to "a lower degree of signal filtering, and thus a higher flow of information" — which would in turn give rise to both "the ability of healthy highly creative people to see numerous uncommon connections in a problem-solving situation and the bizarre associations found in the mentally ill."</P>
<P>Note that the creative people in the study <EM>weren't</EM> suffering from schizophrenia, and so the research doesn't back up the common misconception that people have to be mentally ill to be truly creative. What it does suggest, however, is that <A class=autolink title="Click here to read more posts tagged #creativityandmentalillness" href="http://jezebel.com/tag/creativityandmentalillness/"><FONT color=#303030>creativity and mental illness</FONT></A> may have similar sources. It's certainly possible that genes that cause schizophrenia in some combinations persist because, in others, they lead to heightened creativity that might actually enhance someone's chances of survival. And creativity may be good for humanity as well as individuals. Temple Grandin argues that <A href="http://jezebel.com/5462363/a-bunch-of-social-yak-yaks-temple-grandin-and-autism"><FONT color=#c90f36>"autism genetics"</FONT></A> are beneficial for the human population, though these genes are detrimental to individuals who may produce severe autism. Similarly, having a certain number of creative people around may be good for the human species as a whole. As <A href="http://gawker.com/5540269/being-a-neurotic-insecure-wreck-may-help-you-survive"><FONT color=#c90f36>people with "insecure attachment styles"</FONT></A> apparently aid their social groups by spotting and reacting to threats, creative people may develop innovative ways of responding to them.</P>
<P>Romantics and anti-psychiatry types often wax rhapsodic about the artistic gifts conferred by various mental problems. But while many great artists have suffered from mental illnesses, maybe we should think of these ailments less as prerequisites for creativity and more as related conditions. Then we can stop fetishizing what are, for many, debilitating diseases, but at the same time recognize why they may endure — and why people may be reluctant, at times, to give them up.</P>

<DIV class=headline>Many of us were brought up with this adage: "Honesty is always the best policy." The dilemma about how honest we should be is as old as time, as demonstrated by the following quote from ancient philosopher Sophocles: "Truly, to tell lies is not honorable; but when the truth entails tremendous ruin, to speak dishonorably is pardonable." </DIV>
<P jQuery1269709656318="4">In other words, the value of the truth is sometimes obscured by the pain or difficulty it causes.</P>
<P jQuery1269709656318="5">In many cases it's clear that telling the truth doesn't have negative consequences, and here's an example: If someone asks you the date and time, a truthful response is unlikely to cause heartache. </P>
<P jQuery1269709656318="6">Many other situations, however, aren't clear-cut, and although some of us possess "social" or "emotional intelligence," terms coined by author <A href="?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=news&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Daniel+Goleman%22">Daniel Goleman</A>, many of us aren't interpersonally adept enough to know when the truth will do more harm than good. </P>
<P jQuery1269709656318="7">Here's a classic scenario that men frequently share with me: "My wife asked me if she looked fat in her new dress. I was foolish enough to believe that she wanted me to tell her the truth, so when I answered affirmatively, I couldn't understand why she got so upset with me." The truth, in this case, was apparently not the right answer!</P>
<P jQuery1269709656318="8">If in the interest of being honest, you sometimes put your foot in your mouth, the following guidelines may be helpful.</P>
<P jQuery1269709656318="9">When telling the truth is probably the best answer:</P></DIV>
<P style="DISPLAY: block" class=page jQuery1269709656318="10">When you answer someone's question or otherwise provide truthful information that you believe will not diminish that person in any way.<BR><BR>When the information shared with someone will keep them out of harm's way, and doesn't insult their intelligence, skill, maturity, etc., e.g., "There is a five-car pile-up on the highway, so you might want to take the back roads".</P>
<P style="DISPLAY: block" class=page jQuery1269709656318="12"> When the truth is a compliment that should make the other person feel good. If you believe that openly praising someone diminishes you in their eyes, think again.</P>
<P style="DISPLAY: block" class=page jQuery1269709656318="13"> When an honest response, even though it causes some pain, will do more harm than good, e.g., "As your boss, I need to let you know that your job performance is slipping, and here's how ... "</P>
<P style="DISPLAY: block" class=page jQuery1269709656318="14">When telling the truth is likely the wrong thing to do:</P>
<P style="DISPLAY: block" class=page jQuery1269709656318="15">When the truth unnecessarily hurts someone, e.g., "You aren't invited to my party".</P>
<P style="DISPLAY: block" class=page jQuery1269709656318="16">You are telling the truth at someone's expense because you are frustrated and want to vent.</P>
<P style="DISPLAY: block" class=page jQuery1269709656318="17"> You are either angry at, or jealous of, someone, and wish to hurt them with the truth, e.g., "Your new haircut looks terrible".</P>
<P style="DISPLAY: block" class=page jQuery1269709656318="18">How to avoid hurting someone with the truth:</P>
<P style="DISPLAY: block" class=page jQuery1269709656318="19">Work on your impulse control by stopping to think before you speak, especially if you are experiencing intense emotions.</P>
<P style="DISPLAY: block" class=page jQuery1269709656318="20">If you determine that your motive is bad, the truth is likely to be unhelpful.</P>
<P style="DISPLAY: block" class=page jQuery1269709656318="21">If you realize that the information you are about to share will do more harm than good, stuff it.</P>

<P jQuery1269709656318="22">Information is not always meant to be shared with others, just because it's true. Remember that with honesty comes great responsibility, and although honesty is usually the best approach, the decision to withhold the truth may sometimes be the right answer.</P>

<P><STRONG>1. Don't talk about yourself too much.</STRONG></P>
<P>Personal information — like your political views, religious beliefs, or the fact that your name is not actually "Becky" — shouldn't be revealed until the second or third date with your family. Or better yet, not at all. You know the old rule about letting a man talk two-thirds of the time, while you talk one-third? This works well for your family, too, except that the two-thirds portion should be filled by the television.</P>
<P><STRONG>2. Don't try to cook anything new or complicated.</STRONG></P>
<P>You know how the way to a man's heart is through a simple yet delicious <A href="http://jezebel.com/5163245/the-man-plan-how-to-impress-joe-sixpack--wilhelm-von-winesnob—-at-the-same-time"><FONT color=#c90f36>man-brisket</FONT></A>? Families have similarly conservative tastes. This Thanksgiving, my mom made a pie with whole-wheat crust. Three aunts and six cousins broke up with her right away. Don't let this be you.</P>
<P><STRONG>3. Just agree with everything anyone says.</STRONG></P>
<P>Many great relationships have ended because of superfluous opinions on the part of the woman — and these opinions can be just as damaging to a family gathering. Instead of saying what you actually think, simply smile and nod, or at most say, "Interesting!" Will it really kill you to pretend you don't believe in the moon landing? No, it won't.</P>
<P><STRONG>4. Choose inoffensive entertainment.</STRONG></P>
<P>People have different tastes, and as a woman, your job is to satisfy all of them. Just like a romantic date, an evening with your family isn't about what <EM>you</EM> want to do — it's about what's least likely to piss off someone else. Family-friendly films include <EM>Miss Congeniality</EM>, Miss Congeniality 2: Armed & Fabulous, and any biopic that does not involve drugs. Family-friendly music includes nothing.</P>
<P><STRONG>5. Don't talk about healthcare reform.</STRONG></P>

Mims, 82, died Oct. 6 from complications after a stroke, and following her wishes, her body was seated behind the steering wheel of a 1979 pink Corvette for visitation hours at a funeral home in McMurray, Pa., the funeral director told the Associated Press. </FONT></P>
